TPS Work Permit Fees in 2026: Initial Applications and Renewals

If you are filing Form I-765 for a work permit based on Temporary Protected Status, pull out your prior card and receipt before you calculate the fee. An October 2026 adjustment increased the statutory charge for an initial TPS work permit. The renewal charge stayed the same, so the reason you are filing matters.

What changed for filings postmarked October 16 or later

DHS published the fiscal year 2027 fee notice on October 1, 2026. It applies the adjusted amounts to covered requests postmarked on or after October 16, 2026. The H.R. 1 fee for an initial TPS employment authorization document, or EAD, rose from $560 to $570. The H.R. 1 renewal or extension fee remains $280.

Use the amounts in that notice as fee components when checking your packet. For the total due, consult the current USCIS fee schedule and instructions for your filing category and method. If your packet includes a TPS application or re-registration as well as the work permit request, check the payment requirements for each form. Follow the current instructions about how to submit each payment.

Match the fee to your filing history

Hypothetical: You previously received a work permit through a pending green card application. You are now preparing an I-765 based on TPS. The earlier card is worth bringing to a review, but its existence alone cannot tell you whether the TPS request belongs in the initial or renewal category. Compare the basis of the earlier card with the basis and reason for the new filing.

Gather the front and back of the card, previous I-765 receipts and any TPS approval or re-registration notices. Write down the category printed on the card and the expiration date. If you have more than one immigration case pending, keep the receipts grouped by case. That makes it easier to spot a fee or category copied from a different application.

Review the payment again before submitting

Before mailing a packet, check the planned mailing date against the current fee instructions. If filing online is available for your request, verify the amount displayed before paying. Keep a copy of the submitted forms and payment confirmation. The DHS notice says covered filings postmarked on or after October 16 without the proper fee will be rejected, so check the amount while there is still time to correct the packet.

Our immigration office can review your prior filings and help you identify which documents and fee instructions apply to your TPS work permit request.
