 A green card or Permanent Resident Card is a card that allows non-US citizens to live and work in the United States. Green cards are vital to anyone who is not a United States citizen who wants to work or live in the country. The process for obtaining a green card can be tiresome so an individual needs to make sure they qualify before beginning the process. In fact, it would be advisable for one to obtain a green card lawyer so they can help familiarize them with the method of immigration laws. Qualifications for Green Cards People seeking a green card are usually sponsored by a relative or employer.

Immediate family members of United States citizens are entitled to apply for a green card as long as the relative that is a US citizen petitions for them. Relatives include: spouses of US citizens, children under the age of 21 that are not married, step-children or step-parents of US citizens if the marriage was prior to the child’s 18th birthday, or children who are adopted by US citizens if the adoption occurred before the child turned 16.  Sometimes employers can hire non-citizens whose skills are needed in this country. The non-citizen must show verification that there is an employment offer. In addition, the employer is required to show that he needs them and that there are no US citizens that are qualified for the position. A person can also apply through the Diversity Lottery. This is done annually and is where the State Department selects 110,000 green card applicants from all entries. After a person has a green card, there are two major reasons that it could be revoked. First, if an individual leaves the United States for a long period of time, it would be very difficult to reenter the country.

Generally, it is not wise to be out of the country for more than a year at a time. If an individual plans on being gone longer, then they can apply for a reentry permit, which permits a green card holder to stay gone for as long as two years. The person needs to apply before they leave. Once again, a green card lawyer can help a person with this matter if the need arises to leave the United States. The second reason that one will get a green card revoked is if an individual breaks the law. This does not only mean criminal charges, but also civil offenses as well. Becoming a United States citizen

Applicants generally must meet requirements for continuous residence, physical presence, good moral character and residence for at least three months in the state or USCIS district where they apply. In qualifying cases, Form N-400 may be filed up to 90 days before completing the required period of continuous residence. Other requirements still must be satisfied when the application is filed.

English-language exceptions may apply to applicants who are at least 50 with 20 years of permanent residence, or at least 55 with 15 years. A civics requirement generally remains. Separate disability exceptions and accommodations may be available.
